Why is Kutchinsky jewelry becoming hot and collectible?
Joseph Kutchinsky (1914-2000), often referred to as “the David Webb of London”, and his firm Kutchinsky were a highly respected, regarded and collected name in jewelry worldwide; with the exception of the U.S., where not many know the name. Kutchinsky of London used only the finest stones available for the creations and was known for their whimsical animals and high style designs from the 1950’s through the 1980’s. The London based firm was founded in 1893 by Joseph’s grandfather, Hirsch, a Polish immigrant whose family had served as jewelers to the court of Ludwig of Bavaria. Joseph started in the family business as a teenager in the 1930’s and left the firm to serve in World War II. After the war Kutchinsky specialized in “purposefully ostentatious” jewelry to celebrate the end of wartime restrictions. Joseph relocated the family business for London’s declining East End to the prestigious Knightsbridge area. The firm was sold to Moussaieff Jewellers Ltd. in 1991 and Joseph retired shortly thereafter, ending a career as a great marketer excelling in both quality and customer service and well as a respected jewelry designer.
